The UMFA's FUWA

Young Benefactors, the featured arts organization in this month's edition of 15 Bytes, isn't the only collectors-oriented group at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. The UMFA is also happy to let lovers of Utah & Western art buy art for their collection. Friends of Utah & Western Art (FUWA) "celebrates and supports the growth of the UMFA's collections, while encouraging the enthusiasm of collectors locally and acros the nation."

The organization has two level of memberships, a basic FUWA membership of $250 and the Council Membership of $500. Both memberships include subscriptions to the FUWA Quarterly ezine, admission to one lecture per year by a Western author of note, admission to two lectures per year by regional historians, scholars and collectors and participation in in-state tours designed to expand one's knowledge of Utah art and history. The Council membership level includes an annual consultation with the curator of Utah and Western art, preferred seating at lectures, and invitations to participate in out-of-state tours to Western museums, private collections and auctions.

Art Auctions Down

Yesterday NPR reported on recent art auctions, by Sotheby's and other houses. Recent art auctions in New York and London have resulted in weak bids and withdrawn pieces. A commodity once thought to be recession-proof is showing signs of vulnerability. But some insiders say that may not be altogether bad.

AMH's Roses, and 1899 Exhibitors

Roses by Alice Merrill HorneThis image of a painting by Alice Merrill Horne, used to illustrate the article "Flowers and Feuds" in this month's edition of 15 Bytes, was sent to us by a private collector. It isn't signed, but there is a prominent AMH exhibition label on the painting's back (still in original frame), where Horne lists herself as the artist, and describes the circumstances of the painting's creation.

Horne says she painted it on the occassion of a dear friend's death, memorializing her by painting some of her funeral flowers. This was a common enough practice at the time, something Horne's friend Minerva Tiechert was known to do.

AMH was best known for her floral paintings. The Desert News of December 19, 1899 describes Horne's work in the Utah Art Institute's inaugural exhibition thus: "Among the flower paintings are some that see to give the impression of touch and perfume as well as color and form. Alice Merrill Horne's 'Lilacs' have these, and the dainty grace of early spring seems to breath palpably as an atmosphere about them. A spray of roses by the same artist is one of the most exquisite bits of flower paintings in the room. One can almost feel the velvety touch and dainty scent of the half crushed leaves."

In addition to the four floral pieces by Horne, the inaugural exhibition featured over 300 works by local and national artists. At the end of this post we have included a list of the artists known to have been included in the exhibit, as well as titles and descriptions for many of their works.

Bang for your Buck(s)

Every six months when our fundraisers roll around we have to sit around and think of new witty, stirring ways to say the same old thing -- we need your financial support. We also brainstorm on how best to let you know how your financial contributions will affect your community. Well, this year one of our 2008 Fall Fundraiser contributors has done it for us. Here's a comment from a recent pledge:

"As a local artist I check the call for entries listings weekly. I have found out about many of the shows I've participated in through your website.  I feel like 15 Bytes does a great job of keeping artists through out Utah connected.  It is a great balance of art, venues, people and issues that affect artists. I also love the new "extra extra" blog. Thank you for all you do."

So there you go. Your financial support helps make possible:
Our message board, which includes call for entries
The monthly publication of 15 Bytes, keeping artists and art lovers throughout Utah connected
The Extra! Extra! blog that provides weekly and daily coverage of the arts scene.

So please, if the financial crisis hasn't totally wiped you out, consider making a donation to our fall fundraiser by going to our Fall Fundraiser page.

More Moser

As you may have seen on page 5 of our November edition, our article on Henri Moser was so packed with images we didn't have room for them all. So here are a few extra images from Utah's wild beast, courtesy of the Utah Arts Council. These are all part of the Alice Art Collection, which was also featured in this month's edition.

Corrections on Louise Richards Farnsworth

We'll start the Notes for Bob and Bill feature with a few corrections on our recent article on Louise Richards Farnsworth. We hope to soon be publish a full biographical sketch of the artist, culled from material discovered since the publication of our Alder's Accounts article. But first we should correct a couple of things in the original article:

We published anecdotes related by the present owner of a home (165 A Street) occupied by Louise Richards Farnsworth and her husband, Philo T. Farnsworth. With further research, though, it seems the anecdotes likely refer to owners before the Farsnworths.

The house at 165 A Street in Salt Lake City was built in 1903 by Joseph T. Richards, brother of Louise Richards Farnsworth. His widow, Mattie Sells Richards, sold the home to the Farnsworths sometime before 1920. The house next door, 175 A Street, was built by Franklin S. Richards, a prominent attorney and uncle to Louise Farnsworth. He was an advocate of women's suffrage and his wife, Emily S. Richards, "was one of the most notable Utahns working at both the local and national levels for woman suffrage." The anecdotes in our 15 Bytes article refering to the suffrage movement (and possibly the shopping habits of the "mother") likely refer to the Franklin S. Richards family.
reference: The Avenues of Salt Lake City by Karl T. Haglund and Philip F. Notarianni. Utah State Historical Society. 1980.

Misattribution: Also in our 15 Bytes article we quoted a description of Louise Farnsworth's work --“…she avoids a point of view which subscribes to the conventional picturesqueness of grand vistas and concentrates instead upon the simplicity of the mountain masses which prove sufficiently interesting in themselves…" -- and credited it to Richard Oman. We found the quote in Utah Painting and Sculpture. That source, however, has misattributed the quotation to Oman, whose unpublished manuscript on Farnsworth is referred to in the bibliography. The quote is actually from a review by Carylyle Burrows of Farnsworth's 1934 New York exhibit which appeared in the New York Herald-Tribune.

image: Lady with Green Scarf, a portrait of Louise Richards painted by her cousin, Lee Greene Richards. The painting was likely done in 1904 before both returned from study abroad in Paris. The painting was shipped to Mahonri M. Young in Paris in 1905 for exhibition in the Paris Salon. It measures 76"x38" and is now part of the Utah Arts Council's "Alice" Art Collection. http://arts.utah.gov/experience_arts/collections/fine_arts_collection/index.html
